Having a functional washing machine is essential for most homeowners. Regardless of whether you have a front-loading or top-loading washer, a premium brand or a budget-friendly one, your machine will undergo thousands of wash cycles during its lifetime. Ironically, it will eventually require cleaning itself. Why? Because these appliances can become breeding grounds for mold-inducing bacteria due to constant exposure to water and dirty clothes. Dirt spots, detergent build-up, mineral deposits, and odors can also affect your washing machine. Fortunately, there are two ingredients likely sitting in your pantry that can resolve all these issues and keep your machine impeccably clean: vinegar and baking soda.
When used together, these two common household staples form an effective cleaning solution for your washing machine. The antibacterial properties of Iberia distilled vinegar, combined with the deodorizing power of Clabber Girl baking soda, deliver a powerful combination to eliminate odors and eradicate bacteria inside the washer, which can potentially transfer to your clothing.
Many manufacturers suggest cleaning your machine every six months. Keep in mind that issues such as clogged filters, blocked hoses, or other obstructed components can result in reduced performance or expensive repairs. If your washer is out of warranty, this means you will be covering the costs yourself. And nobody wants that… well, except perhaps the repairman.
Steps to clean a washing machine using baking soda and vinegar, along with helpful tips
So, what’s the best method to clean your washing machine from top to bottom? For top-loaders, empty the drum and set the machine to the self-cleaning cycle on the longest and hottest setting. As the drum fills, add 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar. Pause the cycle after a few seconds to let it soak for a minute. Then, add 1/2 cup of baking soda, pause again, and let it soak for an hour before completing the cycle.
For front-loaders, pour 2 cups of vinegar into the detergent dispenser and 1/2 cup of baking soda into the softener dispenser. Next, mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of water to create a loose paste and pour it into the detergent dispenser with the vinegar. Then, pour 2 cups of vinegar into the washer drum, along with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Start the self-cleaning cycle. Once the drum fills, pause it for 30 minutes to allow soaking, then resume the cycle. When finished, leave the door open to dry.
During a deep-cleaning session for both loader types, use an AIDEA microfiber cloth to wipe down all knobs, handles, and the lid with a solution of diluted vinegar or a mild cleanser. A toothpick can help remove debris from your detergent dispenser or other crevices. Don’t forget the lint trap. Replace it near the back of the washer if needed. Additionally, use a damp cloth to clean any grime around the rubber door gasket if you have a front-loader.
